CILT/BRASÍLIA/BRAZIL/2D/teacher: Cristina Lourenço- 1c.Colonial context

Environment   Sep 29, 2017 by Shadia Carolina da Silva

My footprint is a lil bit big for we have a sustentably world and if it isn't good, it means that my country didn't have a good economy and government, because if the country had a great government and economy, I woundn't need to make actions who I do because I don't have other option for example I need to buy a car if I want to move from anywhere in my city, because the public transport didn't work.

I live in Brazil which is a country in development and it was colonizated by the Portuguese, so when Brazil comes independent and became a country, we have to reconstruct the culture, economy , the forests, ores and animals, but as the colonization basically destroyed these things, we have less than 8% of the biome "Mata Atlântica", a lot of tropical animals are extinctor almost in extinction, the mineral exploration caused big impacts at the couuntry ecosystem , we had to learn their language and it was prohibited to speak our so when the colonization gets over we don't remember more how to speak our original language and our culture almost was lost. We have habits that we took from the Portuguese because the influence, some of than brings the footprint get worse.

The power imbalance causes a lot of problems in the world, some countries are very poor and in the misery while others are very rich and organizated. The  developed countries took there sources from the poors and this causes a ecosystem imbalance and climate change, because for example when they deforest it is causes a impact in the environment, and when they create a industries in these poor contries, the smoke cause a increase in the global warming and climate changes.

These impacts don't happens only in the emerged countries, all the world feel these, and the majority of the countries are industrialized, sois very hard to control. But the rich countries don't feel the impacts as well as the others , they want to feel more in the future and if we don't do anything to get the environment better is go to be terrible for everybody.

Hi Shadia,

Thank you for your insightful comments about the colonial context and modern connections in Brazil. Also, your example of poor access to public transport is a great example of the impacts of a country's economic status and climate change. Perhaps another factor is what countries and cities choose to prioritize for use with their money. I am from Calgary, Canada and while it is a very developed city, the public transportation is not very accessible for a lot of people unless one lives near the metro line, which has not been expanded at the same rate as the city's population has expanded. These are challenging issues for all cities to think about, but especially in developing countries. You also noted that developed countries don't feel the environmental impacts of industrialization as much as developing countries and this is something I agree with. I wonder if there is a way to change this so that more goods are manufactured in the country that uses them so that the strict environmental protection laws will be applied to the factories, rather than outsourcing to other countries. Thank you for raising some important points about these issues.

Hi Allison, thank you for all your feedback, I really agree with the factor that the countries and cities choose to prioritize for use with their money, this happens too much in my country, mainly by diverting money by committing corruption. In Brazil, we have bus stops and metro lines but as you said that happens in your city, happens here too, there isn't accessibility and here, who lives in the suburb don't have how to take a metro because is too far. I want that they can use the environmental protection laws in the factories, this will be very good to start to make a good change.
