Kenya: 2A,Appraisal of SDG#

Sep 29, 2017 by TinTin

How do SDG #13 targets respond to the challenges created by the effects of climate change in water in both Indigenous and non-indigenous communities?

SDG 13 targets clearly portrays the astounding acknowledgement of the human right of water to access it while clean, surplus and inexpensivey .It has majorly and widely made it possible for both indigenous groups and non indigenous groups get educated as much as possible about the risk climate change is inflicting on water and it has also aided in bringing forth mitigation measures to curb or rather reduce the malicious corrosion climate change has to water through initiating mitigation measures in line with activities that sums up the whole reality. Through more exposure and education on climate change cradles SDG 13 has stretched the idea of being plastic bag free take for instance Kenya that is 80% free from plastic bags and has shifted to alternative degradable sources of packaging.

What are the most relevant actions/targets proposed in SDG#13

The most relevant actions proposed in SDG #13 that captured my attention are:

  • 1.Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries and small island developing States, including focusing on women, youth and local and marginalized communities
  • 2.Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
  • 3.Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning
  • 4.Implement the commitment undertaken by developed-country parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to a goal of mobilizing jointly $100 billion annually by 2020 from all sources to address the needs of developing countries in the context of meaningful mitigation actions and transparency on implementation and fully operationalize the Green Climate Fund through its capitalization as soon as possible.

What other areas do you think should be taken into account?

One of the most crucial bit that SDG 13 has not taken into account is the afforestation and reforestation. By commencing this small task, the promotion of biosequestration which is typically the absorbance of greenhouse gases by biological processes which in fact bring about climate change related problems, I strongly believe would help if not wipe out but prevent the harsh treatment climate change has embedded in our ambience by at least reducing temperature and decrease atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide. Moreover this process is lucrative and cost efficient.
