Nigeria:Seasons of Flood.

Environment   Sep 26, 2017 by JOSEPHINE UDONSI

Climate change is inherently global in nature. Climate change refers to an increase in average global temperatures. Natural events and human activities are believed to be contributing to an increase in average global temperatures. This is caused primarily by increases in greenhouse gases such as Carbon Dioxide (CO2.The emissions of long-lived GHGs into the atmosphere from sources anywhere on the globe will affect atmospheric concentrations.

The negative impacts due to global climate change threaten all form of life that currently exists in our Mother earth, as well as diverse human cultures and natural environment. Climate change currently observed has been the result of excessive and unlimited economic growth of highly industrialized countries ,which emitted huge amount of green house gas emissions to terrestrial atmosphere of poor countries that are suffering adverse impact of climate change. In the arid zones, droughts are getting worse and climate uncertainty is growing, Climate change is an unprecedented and threat to food security.

Nigeria my country is not left out in the threats of Climate change due to their daily activities, habits and lifestyle like, bush burning ,dumping refuse in the drain which causes flooding, frequent power cuts that are met with diesel, generators ,food wastage , gasflaring, deforestation and urban slum with vulnerable population that increase carbon emissions.

Nigeria have been suffering from flooding since 1950 since then ,not many improvement have been made in terms of preventing the flood. Recently we have been witnessing deadly and disastrous seasons of floods from 2012 till date, between the months of July and October in which almost 6000 houses, were destroyed ,7,7 million people suffer from the aftermath and 2 million people unaccounted for, flood prone areasin Nigeria are mostly those that are located in delta of river Benue ,Hadeja and Niger as well as the coastal areas in the lowest part of the country and they are Adamawa,Akwa Ibom.Bayelsa,Cross Rriver,Lagos ,Ondo,Oyo

The enormous destruction is linked to poor planning of urban areas, recent changes in climatechange which led to heavier down pour and houses close to bodies of water, some cities dump waste in the drain which blocks the drainage so the excess water instead of going away collects large quantities and spills out on the street.

Flood in Nigeria may be attributed to negligence from government and relevant authorities, currently everyone is spending more time on research of the outcome of the flood.

I believe that mitigation ,quick response adaptation and resilience is the best way to manage the climate change issues in Nigeria.
