A World That Needs Saving

Environment   Oct 7, 2016 by Ariane Michaela Batausa

Simulations can be used as a means to help people realize or experience possible outcomes that may arise due to a certain problem, in this case Climate Change and water consumption of individuals. In relations to the community I am in right now we could see that all the questions, all the problems that arose throughout the activity reflected what every individual, every community, every country, and the whole world is currently experiencing, slow destruction of the Creation of God, of Mother Earth. These activities did not, in any way, seem irrelevant since all of these are reflecting the current situation of the world that we must quickly and constantly address because even though recent studies show that the ozone layer is slowly closing the mere fact that it may open up again is a problem that we are still facing. Moreover, these situations serve as an eye-opener not only to myself but also to anyone who takes these tests, these role-play games because we not only become aware of how our actions affect others but also we are able to foresee the consequences that may occur in these situation.

Climate Change has been an issue since the early 2000’s and has been discussed in every way possible but through the role-play game I did is was able to see another perspective of addressing Climate Change, the perspective of the government officials who are trying to lessen CO2 emissions to reduce contribution to Climate Change but at the same time continue to let the economy of his/her country to prosper. We could say that different operations in the society produce CO2 not because they don’t care what happens to the world but because it is inevitable. With this experience through the simulations I could say that countries must help hand-in-hand to control each other’s CO2 emission that may contribute to Climate Change and Global Warming so that each would be conscious of each other’s actions not to point out the wrong in each one but for the sole purpose of continuing to finding a resolve to the problem of Climate Change and becoming mindful of a countries actions so that it can be addressed immediately. This is because Climate Change affects the different biochemical cycles involved in delivering and equally distributing the nutrients a community must receive. This is because Climate Change can cause extreme typhoons that can destroy crops that would have been later on used by the community. Aside from this too much amount of rain water being delivered by these big typhoons have caused destruction that affects all members of the community namely the farmers, fishermen, indigenous people, etc.

Water is also becoming another problem in society and since it is an important resource that is needed by each and every human being we consume a lot. Water has been an essential part of our existence from the very start because this provides nutrients and help us remain hydrated on days that have too much heat that the body can’t handle. Moreover, water has become a part of our culture such that it helps our bodies remain cool through recreational activities such as swimming. The Earth is abundant of water but 97% is salt water and only 3% is fresh. That 3% is further divided into four more reserves. And only 2% is readily available and is found in rivers. With water cycle being applied in the process these bodies of water would be evaporated and the said water vapor would be delivered and precipitated either on land in which some would become groundwater while others would return back to other bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, sea, oceans, etc. And on average and based on the results of my classmates we are currently consuming an average of 2,000 gallons/day and if it were a week it would be an average of 14,000 gallons/day.

With all these concerns being stimulated by the different activities we had this only shows that it’s time for a change. A change that would not only be based on our actions but also with our perspective in the scenarios we are currently encountering. So that in the very end we won't be the one who needs saving but we would be the one who would save the Earth from its destruction.
