Interactive Simulations

Environment   Sep 27, 2016 by Rachel Zewde

For as long as I can remember, people have always dictating how and how not one can do "good" in this world. Although some choose to neglect such and live selfishly regardless of how it may affect the lives of others, many people have realized that working and living together in harmony is the key to achieving the "good". Hence the reason why so many of us have stepped up to contribute our ideas to the furtherment of the climate change cause.

After reviewing the interactive simulations, I found that I had a better perception on how I might tackle climate change through my daily life. The simulations helped me realize that although large projects substantially further the improvements to our journey on creating a sustainable world, it all begins with our daily lives. With each individual monitoring their daily consumption of the planets resources, we can decrease much of our waste. The footprint calculator was a very influential tool, pointing out the waste given off by our cars as well as other services. (e.g. electronics, clothing, etc.) However some of the questions I deemed as insignificant; the dietary habits for example, in the context of whether or not an individual is living a vegan lifestyle. Both plants and animals are a resource on this planet, therefore if everyone decides to live off one or the other we would be in a crisis.

Although realizing there is a problem when it comes to our daily lifestyle choices is just the beginning, these simulations were a beneficial first step when examining where to begin. Simply changing our meals from processed foods to organic ones grown by local farmers, greatly impacts our environment.
