Bilateral reflection (Croatia - South Africa )

Environment   Oct 23, 2016 by Tena Tunjic

After an interesting conversation we had with our partner from South Africa, we came to conclusion that we are two different worlds when it comes to the amount of water we posses. It felt so unreal and unbelievable to hear how much they lack and how much they have to suffer just to have a normal living standard and most important matter in their lives.

It was shocking to hear that they have to pay fine for every time they use more water than legally approved; or that they can’t use sprinkles. We couldn’t believe what a big deal a little rain for them was when we have regular rain here. In fact, we suffered from huge floods in the past few years.

They were surprised that we can use drinkable water to wash our streets when they can’t even wash their cars. After we asked them about desalinating oceans they informed us that the financial state of their country isn’t that good and that they are in some kind of crisis (on which we agreed that it is our only similarity). We were asked for advice to give them to save water, and unfortunately we weren’t able to think of anything that they weren’t already doing.

It is frustrating that they are doing so much to save water and that we are not doing anything, in fact we are just wasting more than we actually need.
