Crop Pattern in Region must change to save ground water

Oct 17, 2016 by Jatinder Kumar Saini

Hello everybody

My Research on Agriculture Practices in the Region:

YPS Team collected data on the crop pattern in Punjab. The land is fertile and agriculture productivity is quite high. The land is soft and can be used for many kinds of crops. But the farmers in particular are still focusing on traditional crops like wheat and rice, vegetables etc. The weather in the region is hot during the months of April to September. The monsoon pattern has changed over the year. Punjab has been receiving deficient rains for the last four years or so. However the farmers for their profit motive are continuing to sow paddy by using the ground water and as a result the water level in Punjab and its neigbouring states has drastically gone down.

This is serious concern. YPS team is going to visit some of the village to educate them on the alternative crops and address the issue depleting water levels and correct use of water which includes rain water harvesting drip irrigation and correct ratio of water requirement for different crops.

The ever increasing number of tubewells have done a lot of damage already.

The water table levels are alarmingly low.
