Heroes of Tomorrow

Oct 13, 2016 by Nicole Jan Trinidad

Through the years, we humans have been walking on thin ice ever since climate change has completely and drastically ruined the state and well-being of the earth. For the longest time, we have overlooked the current situation of our environment, thereby leaving us with only limited natural resources due to its wrecked and disrupted state. Restoring the name of the earth being “the epitome of beauty” seems a bit farfetched considering the fact that the average temperature of the world is slowly increasing due to climate change. But, I personally hold a tad bit of hope in my heart that there are places in this world that still preserve the beauty of God’s creation.

October 1 2016, on a splendid saturday morning, my Advanced Environmental Science class visited an NGO or Non-Government Organization in Silang, Cavite - this so-called organization is called CELL which stands for Center for Ecozoic Living and Learning - this organization was formed during 1998. The word ecozoic in CELL implies of a home that is full of life in a given period of time; it is also a state of future. CELL is an eco-spirituality center because of their resourceful living and its diverse species of plants; it is also a place in which you can relax and be at peace with yourself, together with the serene atmosphere of plants around you. It is a place where you can go back in time and take a short trip inside because of how their surroundings were full of life and serenity. With it being a non-government organization which means that they get their own funds from themselves, it shows their initiative to preserve what is still left here on earth. It’s quite amusing and at the same time incredible how they literally preserve every living thing - from grass to the smallest of the small creatures; ants and mosquitos, more or less. Moreover, simple yet precise practices to preserve their diverse species of plants have already been a ritual for them; these practices are enough for them to have a healthy surrounding that they can live in. The first practice that they do is by doing organic farming; they aren’t really big on organic farming, but they do have some crops - specifically chinese cabbage, chili peppers, pepper, and rambutan. In addition, they make use of the method vermicompost wherein they use earthworms as fertilizers for their crops. The second practice that they do is by preserving the biodiversity, which is pretty apparent in the organization itself. Third, they practice native livelihood wherein houses - or as we call it bahay kubo in Filipino- are built in their place; they use alternative resources like air blowing from the wind and light from the sun shining through the open area of the houses which, in this case, their fourth practice comes in - the use of renewable energy. Last but not the least, their fifth practice is by having zero-waste management living; for instance, they use human waste and convert it to methane for the biodigester. With the remarkable and fun experience that i had when i went to CELL, it made me rethink of the cruel acts of humans towards nature, wondering how they have the audacity to actually ruin something that was gifted to us by God.

Now, are we really going to just let this world go to waste? The children of today are the future of tomorrow and it is important that we expose them to the real issues here on earth. We, as humans of the 21st century, place an important role in preserving, and if possible, in saving the earth as well. As we humans grow, we also learn how to communicate with everyone and make innovations, especially involving the preservation of the earth with the use of advanced technologies. This new generation would bring hope for tomorrow, especially that young adults are now getting more involved in issues with regards to the problems of the earth. Climate change is worsening in today’s time, and where we are now is pretty apparent considering the fact that natural resources are slowly getting limited, polluted oceans and rivers, slowly melting polar caps due to the increase in the average temperature thereby making animals extinct, and other problems that are known to mankind. The place that we live in right now isn’t really worthy of being called a home when all that man do is just a routine - wreck, benefit from it, repeat. The only competitor the earth has is man. It might be a redundant thing to say, but we humans have to change for the better because we greatly depend on earth’s resources. The earth is the only sustainable living planet there is in the solar system and i couldn’t even imagine what the world would be like if we still don’t do something about it. Our bad attitudes and habits towards the earth has to go because how would the world progress if we don’t start with ourselves? This generation is all about diversity, and it’s time that we communicate with each other and think of something that would make this generation more powerful and possible. Come to think of it, there are many possible ways on how we can create a sustainable and adequate future for the next generations. As i have mentioned, we have to start off with ourselves in order for us to progress towards a better future. There are no specific ways on what to do to create a just and sustainable future, but it is essential that we know what the good things are for us to have a smooth sail in creating a brand-new environment in the future. The seven ecological principles weren’d made for props only - they were made for us to live by it. And in our generation, only a remaining few know all the seven principles, which is why it is important to properly educate the people on the issues regarding the earth’s current well-being.

We humans are put here on earth to nourish our environment - to care for and protect it. Looking at the bigger picture, it’s quite impossible how we can heal the ruined places of the earth considering that various parts of it are too late to recover. everything is interconnected;  what we do affects the other one and would soon affect everything. we are put here on earth because we are stewards of God's creation, and i think it's about time we start changing not only the current state of the earth but also our attitudes and wrongdoings that could affect the whole thing. I do believe that this generation has the power to transform the earth 20 to 30 years from now if we do the right things. probably
