Malachi, Townsville, Australia: My Carbon Footprint

Nov 9, 2020 by Malachi MacLean

To find my carbon footprint, I used the website  International Student Challenge Carbon Footprint Challenge (https://depts.washington.edu/i...) and gained the results shown above. The amount of CO2  that I produce in a year is 7619kgs, which is a bit over half of the Australian average of 11,771kgs of carbon emission. Despite being below the country's average, it is still far above the national average of 3791kgs. This means that I have a lot of things that I can improve on.

Firstly, Townsville is pretty small compared to other cities, in which most places are within walking distance, although the time can vary greatly. My house is about an hour walk from the school, which makes walking to school not a viable option, increasing my carbon emission due to driving to and from school everyday. Something that very slightly offsets this is the fact that we compost and we recycle our food.

A major factor in my carbon emission is the use of fans and air-conditioner. Townsville is quite hot throughout most of the year, so I run my fans almost all the time, which would contribute towards my carbon footprint. My air-conditioner has been turned on a lot more recently due to the temperature reaching the 30's in Celsius, and having a high humidity. This would be a large factor in my carbon emissions.

Overall, I would like to further decrease my carbon footprint and encourage others to do the same!
