Are you interested in writing the #Decarbonize Youth Report?
Starting Saturday, December 12, youth around the world will write the final project report/ paper for #Decarbonize 2020. This paper will be a crucial component to our call for our governments to listen to and value youth voices in the fight against climate change!! In February, we will invite you to present the final paper to climate leaders around the world (over video conference). This is your opportunity to have your thoughts heard!
What will be involved?
- Virtual meetings - We will have 2 large virtual meetings (you attend based on timezone), and then a 2-4 focussed meetings based on your timezone, availability, and need.
- Google documents - We will co-write this paper in groups of students. Each group will be given a topic, and the contact information of their team. you will work together, with my help, to write a section of the report. You will all have an opportunity to edit and review the final document.
- Country profile - Each school will submit a picture of their team (this can be a screen capture in zoom). Submit by December 18.
- Action Profile - Each country will submit a description of their action project. Submit by December 18.
How much time?
- We will work in video meetings and on the google documents from December 12 - December 18. (Of course, if we need more time, it is okay. We will have a goal to be done in one week. But it will be okay if it takes us longer. If we go after December 18, you are not required to be involved. We will ask again for volunteers.)
- I think each student will participate for a total of 10 hours over this whole week. This will be both alone times writing and in group meetings.
Does this sound interesting? Do you want to speak directly to leaders of the world about the greatest issue facing our planet today?! [Not that I want to bribe you, but please know that beyond the experience, and the ability for you to our on your academic record that you were involved in this paper, we here at CGE would also be happy to distribute certificates that officially recognize your contributions on this project - and write any supporting letters you might want or need for future studies.]
Remember, the first meeting is Saturday, December 12 (If attending this meeting is the only limiting factor in your ability to join us, I can also meet one-on-one with keen students outside this time to catch you up on the process.)
- Link to follow shortly
Send me a message to get involved!! sarah@takingitglobal.org
We have a message from one of our amazing #Decarbonize youth! It would be great to have you join her for this fabulous event, as she puts her #Decarbonize learning into action.
Do you have a project that you would like us to feature? Let me know! sarah@takingitglobal.org
Dear Decarbonizers,
Hope you all are having a great week, and staying safe and sane during these trying times. I thought I’d email you all a project I’m working on. I’d love to extend my outreach, and thought you’d be interested.
For those of you who don’t really know me, my name is Nyla and I’m a 14 year old from the California branch of our club. I’ve been part of this club since I was 11, nevertheless this year is my first time on the global white paper team!
The initiative I have set up is in response to a long term goal I set myself after joining #Decarbonize. You all are so passionate, inspiring, and have shown me that youth, regardless of age, have the power to instigate change.
Dolphins (Always) Know Best is a monthly webinar series where I talk to experts about the climate crisis, youth’s role, their experiences, and how we can spread that knowledge and channel it into change. I had the honor of launching the series with Catherine Walker (NASA Glaciologist) and Ms. Wanny Hersey (UNSDG Advocate and Schools Founder), the link is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTxaM4UzuXU
My next webinar is Feb 13th at 8:30AM PST. Hopefully that’ll make it more accessible to other countries. Below I have attached the poster for how I advertise it (link here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_QAbC7A1YQjOD5sUd8UZ9vQ ). I would be so so honoured if some of you would be able to attend, or be able to extend the outreach to anyone who would be interested.
I’ll be talking with Dr. Nathan Robinson (Marine Biologist) and Callie Broaddus (Founder and Exec. Director of Reserva: Youth Land Trust). To give more context, Nathan was the one who pulled the plastic straw out of the turtle in that viral video! Callie’s group has been working to get the first fully youth funded reserve in the Choco Rainforest, Ecuador!
My goal for these webinars is to captivate and capitalise on curiosity - through being curious we want to learn, and knowledge is key to the process of mitigating the climate crisis.
Anyway, I hope you all are doing okay. Look forward to seeing you on Friday!
With Regards,
Nyla H
