Kiera Croghan, Townsville, Australia, Bilateral Conference

Environment   Nov 11, 2020 by Kiera Croghan

The school we engaged with at the bilateral conference taught me about the dangers of dolomite sand and the impact in has on the Philippines. While I did not attend the conference myself, from reading notes from my classmates I learnt that their case study was filled with informative statistics and facts that expanded my knowledge on climate change around the world. In the Philippines, 50% of the groundwater is contaminated, there are 84 deaths to every 1000 related to climate change and, due to the dolomite, coral reefs within 500m have been destroyed, marine life killed and repertory issues have become common around the area. The Philippines dolomite issue effects the similar to the case study our school did, which was unconventional gas.

Both of these topics have large effects on the planet and impact not only the environment, but also the people who live there however, their case study tackled a coastal issue and ours was a more inland issue. Similar to the dolomite mines, unconventional gas has a very negative health impact, but it can also lead to groundwater pollution or groundwater depletion, land subsidence and reduction of water volume in streams, lakes and wetland environments. Overall, the school from the Philippines was very well informed and had a well written case study.

Hi, I am a student from Calgary, Canada.

I love your dedication to this issue about dolomite sand and its impact Philippine's face. Living in Canada, I have not faced this issue, and nor have I heard of these issues. it is astonishing to me how many people die from these issues, and the impact it has as a whole. I would definitely look more into this issue after finding out the severity the dolomite sands have on the Philippines.

Cheers from Canada:)
