Ysabelle, St. Joseph's Academy Las Pinas, Philippines: My Carbon Footprint

Oct 18, 2020 by Ysabelle Marie F. Basa

My total footprint is 3,574 kgs of carbon dioxide per year which exceeded the average carbon footprint for the Philippines (1,438 kgs) but is still below the worldwide average of 3,791 kgs.

I am not surprised about my high consumption of electricity at home because of online classes. As students, we need to fulfill everything with the help of technologies that requires electricity to function. Nevertheless, I will do my best to lessen my time browsing social media and do routines that do not utilize much carbon footprints. When I was taking this test, I realized how many electric fans are running in our home each day. Our country, the Philippines, is a tropical country, so it gets hot most of the time. Based on PAG-ASA’s historical data, the highest record air temperature in Metro Manila, Philippines is 38.5 degrees Celsius. My action for this is that instead of studying in a room with no ventilation, I would sit next to a window where it’s windy, so I won’t need to turn it on.

I was shocked by how much carbon footprint is present in my food consumption. This made me gain knowledge that I should eat more vegetables than meats. They might not be my favorite foods, but I would do anything to take a step and help our world be better.

I should also be conscious of my purchases. I found out that the average purchase of clothes per year in the Philippines is around 2,500 pesos, which is so much less than mine. I usually buy multiple things and clothes from “shopee”. I spend so much there because it is so convenient for they will just deliver it to your door. What I am doing is wrong and I am wasting money so I have decided to live a minimalist life wherein I won’t spend money on unnecessary products. Not only will it help the environment, but it will also help me save money for future purposes.

I am not the type of person who loves to go outside with friends. I do not roam around when I do not need to. Because of this, my transportation rate does not exceed the average in my region. I usually just walk towards my school since it only takes me around five minutes to get there from my house.

The question that still lingers in my mind is what more can I do to help the world, and how can I educate others about our current situation. Our Earth is a beautiful one, and we need to take action now for the future because we are the future.

Hello Ysabelle, after having a look at your carbon footprint it is clear to see that your "home" section of the carbon footprint analysis is well above average which isnt a terrible thing but you should definitely have a go at trying to reduce this number. And the same goes for the "food" section.
