After taking the survey and calculating my carbon footprint, I was very relived and quite proud to see that my footprint is well and truly below the 11,771kgs for the average Australian. Overall, based on my input my total carbon footprint is 5,163kgs of CO2 per year. To make this number smaller, I know I can improve on the ‘Home’ and ‘Food’ categories which are 2,506kgs and 2,421kgs per year. Little ways I know I can improve this trying to become mostly vegetarian or vegan and using less unnecessary electricity at home. However, compared to the regional data for these two categories, my family and I are doing very well to reduce our carbon footprints. Another thing my family and I could improve, is buying less packaged items (even though this is sometimes completely unavoidable), as we still do use a lot of plastic and buy unnecessary things. My transportation category is only 137kgs per year as my siblings and I all walk to school and my parents ride to work, but this could still be shortened if we walk or ride to places that aren’t that far away, rather than driving.
