Moving to action pre task

Mar 4, 2015 by mohammed

Being Canadian means many things. For some it means accepting others and for others it means helping those in need. Whether seeing the world in the eyes of a Canadian is good or bad, it definitely changes our how we tackle and perceive world problems. An example of our different perception is shown in the situation that occurred when refugees from Roma came into Canada. The community in Parkdale took it upon themselves to teach these children, to make them feel like they were part of the community, and to make them feel like they belonged. Many of the children were eventually deported and the community continues to feel the loss of the connections they made. While this may seem like a problem that would happen overseas where many refugees are displaced constantly, this was a problem in Canada.

Personally, as a Canadian, I believed that many world problems were overseas and that Canada was a very well maintained country. However, many problems that we may have thought of as "over there" are in fact things that we face currently. Canada is ranked 17th in a list of 29 countries ranked on the well being of children. Many Canadians would be shocked that well being of children is an issue in such a developed country. Another popular opinion among Canadians is that our Country protects the rights of its citizens of any and all races. However, in BC the RCMP is failing to protect indigenous women and girls from violence. In fact, there have been reports of the police force abusing power and threatening the women attempting to stop the violence. Why is this a problem that is not dealt with immediately if we are Canada ? If we are a country that accepts everyone and helps everyone, Why are we not protecting the people in our communities?

Very poignant posting Mohammed! Learning about global citizenship offers us the opportunity to engage in these complexities and see the interconnections between those problems seen as 'over there' and what occurs in our own country and contexts closer to home. Thanks for sharing your learning and raising some important questions!
