Sienna, Townsville, Australia: My Carbon Footprint

Environment   Nov 15, 2020 by Sienna Graffin

Through the use of an online based carbon footprint calculator, I have calculated the average tonnes of CO2 emitted by my household per year. As can be seen per the results below, my footprint adds to a total of 51 tonnes of CO2 per year and is 20% better than average. Travel shows we are below average, using only a car when needed and walking to school most days. Home includes fans, air-conditioning, lights and general appliances, and again we are below average, as well as services. However food and goods are over average, being wasteful with food sometimes and buying goods unnecessarily. Australian society is prone to buy goods because of wants, not considering actual needs, therefore this significantly contributes to the footprint. A way food can be reduced too is by only buying what you need and not just because it’s "on sale". Composts or worm bins are also a great way to decrease landfill, as well as waste in general.

Hi Sienna,

It's great to see that your carbon footprint is below average and that you do everything you can to keep it that way. It's also great to see you suggesting a solution for Australia's ways of buying what we want rather than what we need.
