Preisianne, St. Joseph's Academy, Las Piñas City, Philippines: My Carbin Footprint

Oct 23, 2020 by Perez Preisianne

My Carbon footprint really shows how my Home has the largest statistics shown. I can't deny the fact that it will be this much big especially in this time of pandemic that here in the Philippines, we are still in a lockdown that is why, more likely, we interact with our activities inside our home. We are 6 in the family (two parents, four children). I can't really say that this is accurate because most of it is just in general and estimation.

Since we cannot interact physically that much with our friends and other people, virtual perspective is used to fulfill meeting other people to socialize although we even use our internet most of the time even if there is no pandemic. I believe the Philippines, despite our internet connection, has been one of the countries who use social media the most.

Regarding about the usage of our electronic devices such as fans and air conditions, I, for one, too known for a fact that we mostly use them, for our country has been located into the tropical zones with just two seasons (sunny days and rainy days) that is why our temperature is hot and humid, but as much as possible, I try to observe using fans with a limited time only so that I can save electricity.

I have this kind of habit of being practical. I don't want anything to get wasted that is why I make sure to use my gadgets and appliances when it is necessary to use, and to turn them off if I don't need them. With this kind of habit, I thought that this would be one of my stepping stones in caring for Mother Earth.

Comparing my carbon footprint to my team in the Philippines, I am one of the highest to exceed the carbon footprint average for both local and worldwide.

I am surprise for the fact that if I may to combine our carbon footprint together, regardless of how big or small our carbon footprint shows, it still gives that so much impact for global warming in just one home not to mention, our environment is little by little getting destroyed for business, industries, buildings, and many other artificial land projects.

To lower my family's carbon footprint, I can always suggest to them to save as much as possible, to recycle things that can be used as much as possible, to recreate things that can be interactive for us. It will be a win-win situation since we can get closer with each other for doing interactive work. Honestly, our main source of carbon footprint is the electricity we use for our internet connection, to study, to watch series or movies, to work, and to simply browse on social media. We can lower our usage of course, but these type of things like work, online classes, and research are need almost everytime of the day, and why deny it when we also all use it in that way especially this pandemic. It will be a really hard progress for us. We can plant small plants in a reusable plastic bottles. I want to promote urban gardening, even by just using those recycable things.

I am not certain on when can we really lower are carbon footprint. I am hoping for some alternatives to help, and since we are all here, and I can't do things alone, I hope one day we would talk about this then we can put different ideas to lower our emissions of carbon footprint. I am not anti on technology, they are the most helpful thing in the world because it makes our life easier than our homo sapien ancestors. It is just that it depends on how we use it, if we could use it in a good or bad way. Maybe that is what I want to imply too. People demand for more. We get easier life because of the hardworks of our ancestors. The quotation "Don't complain just work harder." and "Life is never easy but worth it when effort is being applied", doesn't apply to most of us in a way that climate change is not part of our concerns. We just do what we want. Yes, that is not bad, but sometimes when it becomes to much, it will become worse, ignoring what should we really need to do and protect.

As a city person, everything is advanced for me. Compared to rural people, we have more commercial access and are technology wise. We get information, we get more opportunities in here, but the difference is the size of our carbon footprint in terms of climate change. If the city people practice the advanced way of lowering the carbon footprint in the urban areas, then chances for rural communities to do it in the same way, and since they still have the green plants and exotic animals to live in, the carbon footprint will be more than lesser compared to the urban. That would be a greater help. We got all the access we needed, actions, collaboration and everything should be done not just a dream to just be a dream. Everyone is being applied in here as long as you live on earth. We don't need to divide our race, culture, religion, gender, etc. for solving a global problem. It will be harder for us if we resonate with that. People who doesn't have the ability to share their knowledge because of their undecided situation will be the most affected. We don't want to go further with that either, because remember, from the simplest stuff, or things that are kind of the "lower" part of the tower, when triggered, everything from the second floor up to the last floor would collapse and is really hard to repair. Let us be the pillars of the tower, and work our roles and responsibilities in order for those who doesn't have the opportunity, would follow and strengthen the binds of the tower.
