Kiana, Calgary, Canada: Carbon Footprint

Oct 21, 2020 by Kiana Demchuk

With my Carbon Footprint, it is   52 tons of C02 (Carbon Dioxide) per year which is 6% worse than the average person in Canada. I think the reason why my Carbon Footprint is high is that in Canada we have really long and cold winters usually in October and December which are due to Climate Change. When winter hits we use a lot of energy to heat our homes for 4 months of the year. My home does it best by helping the environment by doing recycling and composting which helps the environment a lot. My mom drives me to school in the morning which I think contributes to my high carbon footprint.  My family tries to eat from different countries (Pasta from Italy, Hamburgers, Sushi from China, Indian food( Butter Chicken).  It is good to experience to try different foods from different cultures and see what they like.  I try to grow stuff in our garden but it hard with our climate  which we can't grow much.

The Second highest in my carbon footprint is traveling because  my mom drives me to school everyday, and also taking the bus everyday after school.  How I can lower my carbon footprint is taking the bus a bit more instead of taking the car. With cars I think they cause more air pollution than a bus because it can take way more people on the bus than in the car.

The least Carbon footprint for me is goods and food  (clothing, electronics,  furniture and your phones) the reason why it is the lowest percentage in my carbon footprint because we do not each as much food during the week as like a huge family of 7 that will probably eat a lot more food because they have a lot more people in their family.  Since, I live in a house with a family of 2 and we do not  buy a lot of goods  like in a family of 5 or 6 that probably has higher carbon footprint in goods and food.  The reason why food is the least carbon footprint as well is because we do not buy a lot of food than a large family because we go shopping once every two weeks to get necessities that we need.  like food and clothing and to make sure our pets are taking of and their basic needs are met as well.

Hi Kiana,

My family also eats from a lot of different countries. I also had a higher then average carbon footprint and I believe it may be due to the large portion of the year in which we use our cooling systems. It is interesting how this can cause so much.

Hi Kiana,

Do you warm up the car in the morning cause its so cold in Canada? and if you do for how long?

hi Kiana!  it was really eye opening, shocking how almost everyone exceeded the average. It's already great what you are doing to compensate, thank you for sharing!!

Hi Kiana, It's understandable why your CO2 emissions would be higher with your winters. Maybe research some ways that wont hurt the environment? However when it comes to your food section, maybe try to eat local food to reduce that part of your carbon footprint?
