About Me
Dr. Moss: Rugby, Science, Food, Ireland
Hi, I'm Gar Moss, A level biology teacher here in Beijing National Day School. For me the good life is a simple one. Not what I have, or what I do, but being content with what I can have and what I can do. I like to think that we can all build the good life by working cooperatively and communicating clearly. We won't always agree, but as long as I can read a book, sit with my wife and play with my kids, I'm content with my Good Life.
My perspective is shaped by where I live and what I read. I read voraciously and I see the effects that climate change has on low-lying islands, on the paler corals, the December fires in South California and the ever worsening storms that are natural by El Nino, but worsened by climate change. I live in China a country that has made 200 years of economic progress in 30 years, but at a carbon price. For us, the impact of human activity is literally visible, when we look out the window and can't see across the street. I also see positivity - Beijing has almost entirely removed coal use from its winter heating power plants and now we have had consecutive weeks of iridescent blue this winter. Smog produced from the burning of CO2 unfriendly coal has been a rare visitor this winter. Electric vehicles abound on the streets. Change is possible and we don't have give up economic progress, cars or comforts to accommodate it.
My profile picture shows me in my home city of Beijing on a blue day. These used to be rare, but they are more frequent this year because of significant changes that have been made which have invisibly reduced the city's CO2 output, represented by the most beautiful Beijing Blue colour.
