Bilateral Meetings Blog report

Our first Bilateral Conversations partner was with our fellow students from Pimlico High from Queensland, Australia. The talk was both fun and informative since we got to talk with students from other countries. The facts they shared were pretty unusual but very informative and they even answered my question about wild insects and animals.

The issue raised in their presentation was all about the Exploration of unconventional gases in Victoria. They discussed the impacts, both short term and long term as well as the different responses from the community and the government.

For our presentation, we raised different issues in our country such as greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and dolomite mining although we focused on the topic of dolomite mining here in the Philippines.

The case studies that we discussed tackle different topics but the similarities between them is that both case studies discuss effects that are harmful to the environment and therefore must be stopped. In Australia’s case being the gas explorations and in Philippines’ the dolomite mining. In terms of responses, the Philippine government had already issued a suspension order on the mining sites. In Australia, while few jurisdictions enacted laws that effectively banned the exploration and development of unconventional gases, the campaign was considered historic for its use of grassroots democracy and the coalitions developed in support for the community movement.

I agree hearing from all the other countries is really interesting, up here in Alaska we are trying to prevent mines and deforestation too, it would severely hurt our ecosystem and precious wildlife.
