Climate Change in Backyard Story

Environment   Oct 7, 2015 by Yusra

Here is a short story that we wrote in class about climate change:

November 14th is the day marked on the calendar of all polar bears across the North. Today, is when polar bears small, like me, start preparing for the harsh, cold winter that we love so much. The howling wind, our frosty breath, and the forbidding cold against my fur. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps; Literally. During our two months of rising temperatures, the amount of coldness we can enjoy is limited.. Lately, it has been getting harder and harder. You can see our home slowly melting away from beneath us, as well as the garbage drifting through our beautiful oceans. I miss my home, where the sea was always filled with fresh food, the air was frosty, and the wind would cool me down as it brushed against my fur. Unfortunately, it's not like that anymore. It’s still summer and the air is warm, the ice is melting, the sea is unbearable to be in, and the food in the sea is almost gone. Right now, we are living to the best of our ability, but it's not going so well. Each year, the ice melts more and more, making it harder for us to find places to live. The extreme heat is causing all the icebergs to melt, so we have nowhere to swim out to while we catch our food. Mother always says that if we wish hard enough, it’ll eventually get better.. Our food supply is diminishing every day, well that’s what I hear the adults saying. I’m pretty sure it’s just a fancy way of saying that we’re just running out of food. Father says we rely on seals to live, even though I think it’s just plain wrong eating my friends. I guess that won’t be a problem anymore since the warm temperatures are melting all of the sea ice away. Without the sea, ice we won’t be able to reach the seals. Which I guess is a pro for them, but a definite con for us. My sister says that this is happening because of the Greenhouse Gas Effect, which is basically a fancy way of saying that a blanket of warm air is surrounding the beautiful earth that we call home. Apparently, this blanket is what makes our home habitable, but too much of this is causing my family to lose our homes and food. This can be prevented by reducing the amount of burned fossil fuels and deforestation. But of course, my family and I can’t do anything to stop it. It’s the doing of the humans, and they just don’t seem to see that not only are they hurting us, but in the long run, they are hurting themselves too.

Please help save my home, a small gesture can go a long way.

This is a short, cute story Yusra! I enjoyed how you included the concept of climate change in various ways. This is a great story that many kids can understand. I liked hearing the problem through the perspective of a polar bear instead of an outsider, such as a human. The emphasis of the problem is more prominent through the point of view of the polar bear.

I really like how you wrote a story instead of just a report full of information. I completely agree that the pollution will not only harm animals, but humans as well in the long run. I also liked how you told us what we can do to help reduce global warming.

This is hilarious and sad at the same time Yusra. I was particularly impressed by the sister who seems to be wiser than most of the humans!

Another bad thing that can happen to you (as a polar bear cub) is that your mother may has to come closer and closer to cities to find food. Although she may be a very nice and non-aggressive lady, humans may feel threatened and may kill her. That will be of course a disaster and literally "climate change in somebody's backyard".
