What are your country’s future plans, and the implications?

Environment   Oct 25, 2015 by Kiara

The Canadian government has decided to focus on 4 key issues: Addressing Climate Change and Air Quality, Maintaining Water Quality and Availability, Protecting Nature and Canadians, and Shrinking the Environmental Footprint. Canada’s electricity system is already one of the cleanest in the world and from 2005 to 2012 Canada’s greenhouse gas emmisions have decreased by 5.1% while the economy has grown by 10.6 percent. Canada’s 2020 greenhouse gas emissions are looking to be 130 megatonnes less than if no action was taken. 130 megatonnes is roughtly the amount of all of Canada’s road transporation for a year. While Canada does it’s part other countries must also do their own part in reducing carbon emissions. Together we may not be able to do a 180 but we can definitely change. China has recently. It is important not to have environmental regulations make your economy too uncompetitive in a global economy. China and the US have traditionally been holdouts on global climate which helps their economy as they don’t need to worry about environmental standards. In a recent statement by China they have agreed to propose a standard is good news however one needs to review the details of the standard to see how strict it is. Though most importantly for all countries that are setting standards, only time will tell if they are committed to keeping the standard.
