My Vision for a Sustainable World

Environment   Sep 29, 2015 by Taha EL-Husseini

My vision for sustainability must be made manifest in every dimension of human activity. However I believe the best way to take action is to intervene in the political dimension. Public polices that promote sustainability, such as limiting carbon emissions. This means that some industries such as the vehicle industry would have to stop producing cars with the current engines and the company has to innovate to come up with new cars that don't release harmful gasses into the atmosphere. Additionally some products that are considered elastic goods (goods that aren't significant or necessary) and require factories for production would also have to stop. Furthermore through the stage of politics, one could also have the effect of altering unsustainable economic and social activities. This way carbon emission will be significantly lowered giving the world more time to possibly recover.

Although there are certain flaws about this vision. If such limits were to apply in the real world there would be an abundance of unemployment in the world considering the overpopulation. Unemployment could lead to increased stealing or homeless folks that beg for money.

Hi Taha. Very interesting opinion. I am a bit curious about this phrase :"some products that are considered elastic goods (goods that aren't significant or necessary) and require factories for production would also have to stop." Can you please provide an example for this?

I actually think that there is a way to have a sustainable society without putting everyone's jobs in danger. Human beings are going to need energy and the process of energy production and distribution always needs talented, smart people -like yourself- to innovate and optimize the systems. So there might be a drastic shift in the direction of energy industry towards green/renewable resources, but it won't necessarily mean mass unemployment.

You also mentioned "overpopulation". I think that population control is a crucial part of having a sustainable world, but another thing that can be done right now is to try and distribute the resources among the existing population more evenly by relying mostly on local sources of energy, food and labor.

Keep up the good work:)
