Our vision for a sustainable world

Sep 28, 2015 by AHSofChungHsingTW-30

It used to be wonderful everywhere--clean air, clean sky and clean water. However, technology has developed, and human beings broke the peaceful balance for their own convenience. Our vision for a sustainable world is that humans will be willing to live in harmony with our nature once again.

Indeed we cannot stop world economy development, but we can acheive this goal of sustainability by changing our behaviors in daily lives.

  1. We shouldn’t waste energy. We should turn off electric appliances when they’re not in use, and we shouldn’t leave air-conditioners on for the whole day, especially when people are not there.
  2. We should reduce greenhouse gases. We can walk instead of drivion or riding vehicles and take public transport if we want to go to a far place. We can bring our own chopsticks instead of using disposable utensils.
  3. We should choose detergents cautiously and avoid cleaning agent containing phosphate.
  4. We shouldn’t litter everywhere. Wind may blow it into oceans and it will lead to tragedies.
  5. We can plant trees. It can help reduce CO2 and clean our environment.
  6. We have to economise on water to avoid water shortage.

I mostly agree. Although all of these would indeed translate into a cleaner better environment. The fact of the matter is that everyone needs to be like this. Simply stating that all this should be done - likely will not cause everyone to think to same. Corporations and government are the ones who need to jump start the saving of the environment. One individual average person will not cause a ripple effect to change the environment. Someone of more significance like a government member or party would cause a ripple effect indeed causing the environment to be bettered. Although I do wish people just thought by default like this - but that isn't the case - so other action must be taken, such as the stated above.

One point I disagreed with was the first bit. "Humans will live in harmony with out nature once again." I don't think that will happen. As long as we progress we deviate more and more from nature. Eventually it might be in say 100 years no one will know what a natural tree is. Perhaps we will have synthetic trees on streets that power cities. In order to go ahead in evolution we will need to sacrifice something - that will likely end up becoming nature.

I also agree with what was initially posted. It is a beautiful vision of sustainability which we can all accomplish if we try.I think there are lots of things that are inherently beautiful about having a pristine natural world. Particularly all the special wonderful organisms that have evolved over millions of years to be really good at what they do. They are so complex, precious and unique. When these things disappear, we will never get them back. I would argue that a simple earth worm species is more precious than a Mercedes Benz. There are so many things that these organisms do for us for free that essentially enable us to survive. If we lost a majority of our plant species, we wouldn't have enough oxygen to breathe. If we lose our earth worms, nutrients wouldn't recycle in the environment and we wouldn't have crops to eat. We need basic services provided by the natural world in order to survive.
