1. Irrigation

Since the late 1800s, farmers in drought-prone southern Alberta have relied on irrigation systems to supply the water that was necessary to grow crops. In the decades that followed, government granted water licenses to many agricultural producers in the south. These licences provided certainty for farmers, and later irrigation districts, by assuring them they would be able to divert a certain amount of water into the future. Today many of these licences are the oldest in Alberta and under Alberta law users with the longest standing water licences are given water diversion priority. Given Alberta is growing and no new water licences are being granted in southern Alberta, we need to find a way to meet new and changing water resource demands, including water required for our communities to support their goals; for agricultural production to meet a growing global demand for food; for increased energy development to meet global energy needs; and all supported by healthy aquatic ecosystems. How do we balance the need to support new demand for water in these areas with the need to ensure we continue to meet the needs of long-standing licence holders?

2. Oil and Gas

This sector has been reducing its use of freshwater. How has it accomplished this goal and what else could the sector consider doing to reduce its use of freshwater. Do the solutions have any potential consequences?
