Global Action Reflection

Climate reflection questions

  1. Personal reflection - what can I do as an individual, going beyond simple actions such as recycling, to fundamentally change my relationship with Mother Earth and our sisters and brothers?

We can reduce our consumption of material items, and take into consideration that our environment is much less bountiful and healthy than it once was, and that it is in a very delicate situation. We can be smart consumers, only buying what we need instead of what we want. We can cooperate with the earth, and rather than consume it, we can give back. We can help by educating ourselves and those around us, being conscious of our actions and their effects on surrounding ecosystems, whether they are across the world, or in our backyard. As individuals, we must begin with being aware of climate change, and those in more vulnerable countries who are affected greatly by climate change, and therefore start to have a change in attitude and the way we look at Mother Earth.

2. What can we do as a community, in our community, now, to share what we are learning, to share Pope Francis’ message, and inspire community global conversion?

The first steps are to start educating our community about the effects of overconsumption and of climate change. By raising awareness about the issue it might provoke people to get more involved in conserving our world. In our schools, we can start to purchase local products and organize groups that look for global warming and pollution solutions. As well, within our community, we can organize fundraisers to not only create awareness of the situation, but also to help developing countries who have been most affected by ecological injustice.

-Trash challenge

-Light/power challenge

-Measuring and reducing

-Lights that flicker on and off (Washrooms and changerooms)

-Temperature adjust

-Compost system

-Energy efficient hand driers

-Computer unplugging team

-Water fountain that counts

-pollinator plants

3.What can we do as Canadian and global citizens, to make real, lasting change on the social, political and economic fronts, in global solidarity with our sisters and brothers, to put people before profit, for the health of our planet, and for the rights and protections of our human family?

Political- We need to start with our governement implementing laws and policies which can help our society view protecting the environment as a necessary concern. The government is in a position of power to regulate and fund industries using renewable resources. This will also help to create more environmentally friendly career options and a greener economy. The government is also in a position to enact environmental education into our schools to promote a green society for the new generations.

Social- We can remove stigmas about environmentally friendly objects or services being for “Hippies” by popularizing and promoting them. We can also use social media to inform citizens of Canada of ways to protect the environment in their daily lives. We can rewire the way people think so that they are trained for conservation, allowing us to educate the world about environmental protection.

Economic- We can start to make lasting change in the economic front by eliminating our dependence on oil and gas products, and instead supporting and founding industries that focus on environmental protection, not destruction. Industries such as these would encourage economic growth by supporting alternative sources of energy, transportation, etc. If we remove the world’s dependence on the oil industry, we can focus on rebuilding the world’s economy to be more environmentally friendly. If we rework this, we can create a global economy that is sustainable.

Really Great ESSMY!  These are courageous, realistic actions!

1) You've hit it exactly - being educated consumers, and taking that time to consider wants/needs, impact of our choices, and making informed choices is one of the ways Pope Francis calls us to be in solidarity.  Found any good resources yet to help inform these decisions? Are there groups, apps, websites out there who do environmental ratings of products, who discuss labour conditions, who provide more info than the tag on the product?

2) Making changes at home to reduce our impact, and helping those who are already affected adapt - Development and Peace requested these exact things in our campaign this past year, sending thousands and thousands of postcards to the Prime Minister from across Canada, in addition to the petition! Part of being good citizens is telling our elected leaders what we want - this Global Classroom will produce a tool to do advocacy, and perhaps as a complimentary or follow up action, you might consider sharing your thoughts with your MP? Check out the advocacy guide and info on talking to MPs in the 2nd link.

3) Love it!  Let's do it!
