Week Two Blog Response

Globalization   Apr 27, 2016 by Isaiah Rust

1) What can I do as an individual, going beyond the simple actions such as recycling, to fundamentally change my relationship with Mother Earth and our sisters and brothers?

To change the way that we interact with the world we must first put into actions other small changes. In my life I am currently looking at ways that I can become involved with youth organizations that are doing their best to work towards positive change.

Two organizations in which I am currently following are Sustainable Youth Canada, an organization providing youth with earth-friendly alternatives for every day activities whilst also providing a platform for students to lead and engage with environmental and energy sustainability. The second organization which I am currently researching is The World Mosaic Project, a project led by social-media, that is taking a stand against Islamophobia and xenophobia through the use of sharing signs and personal stories on the culture of Islam as well as refugees, and what it means to be a person in need.

By living this lifestyle I am reducing my ecological footprint and working towards changing my relationship with Mother Earth, our sisters and our brothers.

2) What can we do as a community, in OUR community, now, to share what we are learning, to share Pope Francis’s message, and inspire a community ecological conversion?

In order to share what we our learning and to spread Pope Francis’ message we must first take it upon ourselves to reach out. There are a number of way in which we can do this such as:

  • Social Media.
  • Announcements at school.
  • Posters/Flyers that provide an overview of Pope Francis’ message.
  • Collaborating with local organizations that have similar goals.

Any press is good press.” - Unknown

Essentially, by spreading the word of what we are doing we are getting people talking about Laudato Si’ which in turn encourages others to become curious and to do their own research on Laudato Si’.

3) What can we do as Canadian and global citizens, to make real, lasting change on the social, political and economic fronts, in global solidarity with our sisters and brothers, to put people before profit, for the health of our planet, and for the rights and protection of our human family?

Although it is much more easily said than done, at this point we must raise awareness. Unity is key in achieving our goal and it will take time and collaboration to begin moving in the right direction but once we do, we will almost certainly and rapidly gain speed. I believe that what we must do is clear in terms of what it is we want to achieve. It is how we want to achieve our goals that is difficult.

This is an issue that addresses the entire world but before we get there, we must first start in our own communities. By doing what we know we become excellent. Therefore, we should start by incorporating Pope Francis’ message into what we enjoy in our daily lives whilst building upon what is already around us and at our disposal. Through local collaboration and by addressing one problem at a time we will definitely be able to make immense progress; even if it is only for a small number of people it is still a large difference.

Thanks for this Isaiah!  Indeed, collaboration toward the common goal is key!

1) Getting involved in organizations is great, and these sound like great groups. Using your people skills to outreach is fabulous.  But what about the quiet, at home, doing his own thing Isaiah - what constitutes this 'lifestyle', as an individual, that is changing your relationship with Mother Earth?

2) Sounds great... Apart from the Virtual Town Hall, what is Step one to make it a reality in your school, in your community? When does it happen?

3) How do we bring Pope Francis' message into our daily lives?

Remember to also reflect on the voices of those whose experiences are different from our own. What can we learn from those living and reflecting on Laudato Si' around the world? From those whose livelihoods is affected, or at risk, from climate change?
