Ghana- Reflection Questions

Environment   Oct 28, 2015 by lincoln-nataliad

What were the notable differences between your two countries in relation to climate change?

While Canada is an economically developed country, Ghana is not. Therefore, it would suffer greatly if the effects of climate change were to rapidly increase. Ghana would need to be provided with some kind of international aid to combat this problem while still trying to develop. Canada, on the other hand, is more of an aid-donor; in fact, it recently gave aid to Ghana, India, and Bangladesh as a part of the DECCMA program. Because African countries are more vulnerable to climate change, the effects of climate change would be more present here than in Canada. Climate change would also have different effects on each country. While Ghana would be under the threat of flooding and extreme heat, Canada would experience shorter winters, greater ice areas melting, and a change in ecosystems and wildlife (many species will be forced to adapt or be faced with the threat of extinction, which is more plausible if temperatures increase rapidly).

What factors do you think influenced the differences?

The geographical region of Ghana and Canada influenced the differences, as Ghana is just above the equator while Canada is up north. This difference means that the average temperatures in Ghana are already significantly higher, and if climate change were to speed up, the temperature increase would make the climate very hot. In Canada, on the other hand, the temperatures would not be unbearable, but winters would be shorter, and polar ice caps would melt more. This would throw Canada's climate and ecosystems off balance. Another difference is the development of each country, since Canada is developed, while Ghana is developing. This requires different actions to be taken by the countries, as Ghana does not have the resources needed to combat climate change (funds, technology, etc).

Hello!
Thanks for the great blog post! You highlighted some great contrasts between Ghana and Canada's issue with climate change. It is quite interesting to hear how the economy of a given country can greatly impact its mitigation towards climate change. I like how you included the ecosystems and wildlife. Very important to consider all aspects of climate change, weather, biology and the human impact!  Here a few more ideas for you to look into to expand on this topic!

May I suggest another source for you to read about how Ghana is working on developing strategies towards the flooding issue, http://opendepot.org/2569/1/AASR-2015-6-4-196-201....

I'd also suggest, for interest,  looking into another issue, as our world and oceans are warming, (you may find information about this on the lastest IPCC Report 5 2013, in this document https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar5/wg1/docs/WG1AR5_FAQ... page 7 on world warming and page 11 on oceans warming). This could cause sea levels to rise, (as warmer water expands) as well, increase in ocean warming may also increase strength of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean. This could become a cause for concern as Canada never had to deal with such issues in the past http://www.canadianunderwriter.ca/news/calm-before...

Please let me know if you'd like more information regarding a specific topic!

Yes, it can be a world of difference when in Canada we have the economic capacity to respond to the adversities brought on by climate change. However, in Ghana, a little can mean a lot. A lack of monetary resources means that there will need to be more ingenuity and more creativity in the ways they tackle climate change.

One striking example of a clever Malawian boy comes to mind here:
