How does Climate Change affect Taiwan?

Oct 28, 2015 by AHSofChungHsingTW-30

Hello! We are the students from HS of Chung Hsing, Taiwan. The following statement is the situation happening in Taiwan.

Global warming has been influencing our community and causing many changes. Details are illustrated as follows. The Average temperature of Taiwan has increased by 1.3 degrees Celsius due to global warming; this also resulted in dengue fever.

Dengue fever, which only happens in areas between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn tends to shift northward to higher latitude. In Taiwan, dengue fever has spread from the south area to the north. So far, more than ten people have died of dengue fever, which has a serious impact on Taiwan. In addition, the occurrence of salt water intrusion has become more frequent due to the rise of sea level caused by the melting of iceberg. It is believed by the authority that if the sea level rises by 6 meters , low-lying cities such as Taipei, Tainan and Kaohsiung will face serious consequences, such as being completely submerged in sea, which will as a whole subsequently influence Taiwan’s agriculture and economy seriously. This has led to dramatic losses in low-lying agricultural areas in Taiwan(Linbian Township, Pintung County)as sea water floods the crop fields. Crop fields at low-lying areas have been flooded by salt water for some time, and our food supply is decreasing. Coral bleaching and species of Formosan Landlocked Masu Salmon are facing extinction as a consequence of global warming. With the temperature on the rise, not only have large numbers of animals been forced to leave their original habitats, but plants such as Taiwan Cypress have been noted to decline in its acreage.

The impacts of climate change to Taiwan are immense. Taiwan will have a lot to benefit from global co-operation in an effort to overcome climate change. I am curious; how much agricultural produce is imported form other countries? And is the Taiwanese public generally familiar with climate change and it's impacts?
