START DATE:Mar 6, 2012DUE DATE:Mar 13, 2012STATUS:Open
Description
- Read the attached excerpts from the most recent Senate report, entitled, “Attention Canada, Preparing for Our Energy Future.” This document will help to frame Canada’s energy reality in relation to the rest of the world. It also provides an energy outlook strategy and will encourage students to begin thinking about the various factors that need to be a part of a viable long-term energy policy in this country. The document is attached below.
- Students should then read two of the following five articles (ensuring that each article gets read by someone in their school group) regarding Canada’s involvement in both the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Conderence and the 2011 Durban Climate Change Conference:
- “Canada part of Copenhagen climate deal” http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2009/12/18/copenhagen-last-day.htm
- “Copenhagen winds down with non-binding agreement” http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=2362917
- “Canada’s climate change statement in Durban” http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/12/07/kent-speech-un.html
- “Durban climate change deal praised by Canadian companies” http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2011/12/13/durban-climate-change-canadian-companies_n_1147306.html
- “Will Canada be left behind in Climate Change?” http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/opinion/will-canada-be-left-behind-on-climate-change/article2265082/print/
Task
- Go to PollEverywhere and complete the survey on Canada’s international role on energy policy and climate change: ttp://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/NTM2OTE5MDU2
- Upload a 5 minute youtube video (paste a link to your school's section on the Google Doc) that details how Canada should explain its energy interests to the rest of the world. Pretend that you are a delegate at the climate change conference in Durban and are trying to balance the demands of economy and environment.
