Port River Cruise

Oct 28, 2015 by wilderness-ohardy

Our class ventured to Port Adelaide to go on a cruise to see the environment on the Port River Estuary. I was surprised to see the diverse setting, a mixture of wildlife and man made structures. On one side of the river I saw power plants and massive power lines, and on the other side mangroves, birds and other wild life. My teacher explained to me that in the future, if the sea levels rise, the side covered in wildlife and mangroves will be submerged under water and the man made side would be safe because we would stop the water flooding our power plants.

Mangroves play a massive part in the cycle of lives living in the port river estuary. The plants maintain the right balance of salt in the water, keeping it safe for the wild life to live in. Mangroves move as the tide goes in and out. Man made structures are stopping this happen and the mangroves can not do their jobs properly.

My experience on the cruise informed and helped me understand how important the Estuary is for the wildlife. I am keen to learn more about the effect of climate change on Port Adelaide and how we can prevent it.
