Living Global Citizen
My name is Sumeyye Ozer, a student from ME Lazerte high school, in Edmonton Canada. My blog aims to further understand the meaning of being a global citizen and the importance of promoting global citizenship to younger generations in high schools. Being a global citizen is more than just being a citizen of the world, even though many people still define it this way. Having done research of my own on this matter it has come to my attention that the younger generations lack knowledge when it comes to this topic.
A global citizen is an individual who contributes to the well being of our world and stands against any form of injustice. As a global citizen one takes into consideration the needs of all human beings and strives to fight for their rights. A global citizen does not merely travel the world for leisure purposes or speak many languages. To be a global citizen the individual should educate themselves on the different nations and cultures around the world and should have some sense of responsibility for their well being. Helping solve world problems is also a characteristic of a global citizen. I truly believe that global citizenship is an important subject and should be taught at high schools all around. Being a global citizen shows that we care and as people we should all care for all of humanity.
I recently had moved to Edmonton, last year to be exact, from the province of Quebec where I had completed my elementary and junior high years. During those years I have noticed that the schools I have attended did not do much to promote global citizenship. Even with my very diversified background and having lived in many different parts of the world I myself actually never knew the true meaning of this term until I came to my new school ME Lazerte. Here we have many clubs that promote global citizenship such as the social justice club and the green team both of which promote a clean world. Being a global citizen allows you to stretch your arms out more. What I mean by that is that it enables you to connect with people around the world and better understand them and their needs. I believe being a global citizen is and promoting it is very important for us humans. What bothers me is that many schools around the world may address the topic, but they do not live it.
