We think that affecting climate change has to start with action and with us. Sa-Hali has approximately 800 people. There are 186 school days in a year. If everyone brought one disposable water bottle per school day, our school puts 148 800 bottles into landfill. These bottles would take between 450 and 1000 years to decompose, depending on the plastic used. Climate change is definitely impacted by the amount of garbage we put into landfills to be buried or burned. It impacts our water tables and will eventually impact the water available for human consumption.
To take action, we have decided to encourage all grade 8 students at our school to drink water by using a water bottle with our school logo on it and a place to personalize their bottle. We would like to challenge all the grade 8 homerooms to purchase a water bottle and the first class with full enrolment will get a pizza party. We will track the water usage through homerooms by checking once or twice a week to see who has their water bottle with them. We have applied for a grant from BC's Healthy Schools Inquiry Project initiative and our school's Parent Advisory Council for extra funds to reduce the cost of bottles for grade 8's to $2. We will be asking our principal to put more water bottle filling stations around our school. We currently have one in our gymnasium. We will also be challenging the grade 9-12 students to purchase water bottles at full cost ($8). We might even challenge the grade 8's at other schools to see if they can beat us in use of non-disposable water bottles.
