Reflection --> What Can I Do?

Environment   Apr 27, 2016 by Sally Le

This is my first post so please feel free to give me criticism! My name is Sally and I am from Father Lacombe High School in Calgary, Alberta. So the question I am attempting to answer is...

1) Make the context of the reflection personal – what can I do as an individual, going beyond the simple actions such as recycling, to fundamentally change my relationship with Mother Earth and our sisters and brothers?

And so, the following is my belief and an attempt to answer.

As an individual, we have our own freewill to make choices. We choose what we want to do and what we think is best for us, at the time, without thinking of the greater future that is approaching.

We think about living in the now, rather than thinking in the future, but if we were to consider the future and the end goal, I believe is going to make the biggest impact of all, when trying to change our relationship with Mother Earth and EVERYONE.

When we start thinking about a better world, where there is kindness everywhere you turn, or that there is a decrease in global toxins and emissions, it makes us think more about investing more thought into everything we do.

It is the same mentality when you are trying to save up for university or a house. When you are in the moment, about to buy more clothes, or more entertainment, you are infatuated by it, and without thought, you buy it.

But if you were to remember that you wanted to buy a new house, or that you want to pay for university for a degree, you would think twice about spending more money than you need to for living (utilities, food, hygienic products, etc.).

If we thought about the degree we would be pursuing, saving money and working is a small price to pay for furthering our knowledge in something we are passionate about.

Once you have that want for a new house, whether it is because you crave independence or you want a place to settle down for your potential family, you know now that it is worth saving money.

Now, apply that to this to how we start our initiative in changing the world, step by step. When it comes to Mother Earth, we should be more aware of our surroundings, and think of a better earth that we would want our kids to thrive in, or the next generations.

When we hold this mentality, recycling isn’t such a big task, but makes an impact. Or like donating your clothes instead of throwing them away, which has less mass in the landfills, and it also helps those in need. Keeping your wrappers in your pocket to throw out or recycle, reduces the amount of litter on the floor. These small things impact the world, in more ways than one.

For our Brothers and Sisters, simply smiling to others, provides them warmth and comfort, or greeting those you don’t know at work, or those neighbours who have been living beside you for a few weeks or years, gives them that small bond and starts building relationships and trust between you guys. All of this can be done, when you simply think of a more peaceful world you would want to live in later, or the creation of a more tight knit and loving community of caring.

Actions speak louder than words, and even the smallest of actions can do so much more, than merely dreaming about change. I hope this inspired you, my friend!~

Bless you and take care~
