About Me
Hi! I'm Beth, and I'm a grad student here at the University of Alberta. I grew up in a small town in the south of England, and moved to Cambridge when I started studying for my undergrad. I stayed there for four years studying biochemistry, and specialised in a type of microbe called protists.
I moved to Edmonton about a year ago to study at the University of Alberta. It was a big change but I think I'm finally getting used to it here! I'm now working on the biology of protists associated with unique Canadian environments such as the oil sands. In particular, I'm interested in the biology of chloroplasts and how photosynthetic species are adapted to live in these environments.
In my spare time, I do a lot of science outreach around Alberta and in Edmonton, go climbing, play board games with my housemates, and try to convince people I actually went to Hogwarts.
