How does the assigned UNFCCC theme relate to your country?
- As an archipelago country, we want to save our sinking islands. We have also been experiencing very strong typhoons for the past few years. The strongest one is typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda. Its not all about the floods. The El Niño or dry spell also makes our water sources dry which results into frequent water interruptions nationwide.
How does it relate to your country pairing?
- Australia is also currently experiencing drought which is similar to El Niño in the Philippines. The temperature in Australia is expected to rise by 5.3°C by the end of the century. It is also predicted that climate change will hit Australia than the rest of the world.
What is the current state of this UNFCCC theme?
- The Philipppines is having stronger storms each and every year. It has damaged the businesses and the houses of the common Filipino people. And we are also suffering from El Niño and it makes the hot air pull the storms into the northern part of the PH. What makes it worst? The main rice and vegetable plantations are in the north. The result? Unstable prices for food.
What are your country's future plans and the implications?
- Several cities have been implementing regulations on segregating trash. They have also banned using plastic in different business establishments like the grocery stores, restaurants, and department stores. Big malls also started to sell reusable bags that they can use everytime they shop.
What strategies to combat climate change do you think are best/worst for your country?
- They should concentrate on using less non renewable energy sources like fossil fuels and use solar,wind, or heat energy as a subsitute. The Government should also use the social media to knock on peoples mind on saving the environment around us.
