The energy in Taiwan mostly generates from the thermal power plants. They may cause air pollution and threaten people's health.
Some people say that nuclear power may be a great alternatives to the thermal power plants. However, three nuclear power plants in Taiwan are scheduled for retirement between 2018 and 2025. What's more, due to the Fukushima disaster in Japan, there's a fierce debate about the operation of the fourth nuclear power plant.
The government should take the energy issue seriously since the environmental protection and the security of citizens are really important.

Taiwan imports more than 90% of it's energy, so it is very dependent on other countries. It will need to develop some of it's own energy generating potential to be more secure. It would be great if it invested more resources to researching and developing more renewable energy such as wind/solar/tidal power.

I really agree with your ideas that Taiwan "needs" to develop more alternative energy such as wind power or tidal power. Though nuclear power is efficient and doesn't cost a lot, it may lead to a disastrous consequence if we don't manage the nuclear power plant carefully.
I hope that the government in Taiwan can put more effort on developing alternative energy.
HAHAHAH I am Jackie. I am also from HS of Chung Hsing. I think it is difficult for government of Taiwan to retire the three nuclear power plants, though the Fukushima disaster might frighten lots of people.
The reason is that we still relay on nuclear power very much and I think there is nothing can replace nuclear power now. So it seems that if the government want to do this, they have to put a lot of effort in this discussion.
