UNFCCC- How does it relate to your country pairing?

Oct 16, 2015 by Jasmine Sekhon

Canada is home to the many sacred lands of Aboriginals. These sacred lands have sustained the Aboriginals for many years, but now due to industry, Aboriginals are losing their homes and ceremonial grounds. One example of heritage and culture, as well as home loss, we see is the building of the Site C Dam in British Columbia. The building of the dam would put the Bear Flats, a sacred gathering place, as well as the whole Peace River Valley under water, obliterating the heritage and not to mention many of the graves of the First Nations’ ancestors underwater. British Columbia’s Hydro company does not understand the effects and repercussions building the dam will have on the First Nations that have lived there, their whole life. First Nations have been here before us and have a right to the land they live on before anyone else. British Columbia’s Hydro company is taking away that right from them. Balancing forest management and the indigenous land rights of indigenous peoples is a hard job, but nonetheless Indigenous peoples should have the first say on anything related to where they live. Building this dam would cause a massive loss to the enrichment of history in Canada because that would prevent scientists and archaeologists from collecting pieces of history to enrich and augment the history of Canada. Every opinion needs to be heard, especially of the Indigenous peoples, so we don’t end up losing the past of the first people who lived here.

Hello, I'm a student from Affiliated High School of Chung Hsing University in Taiwan.

I agree with your idea that the First Nations in every country have the right to the land they have lived on. The First Nations in Taiwan have also faced the same difficulties that the government may ignore their rights.

As a result, I think that the governments in both of our countries have to pay more attention on the First Nations.
