Canada (QueenE) Final Report

Environment   Nov 13, 2015 by Leah Buchanan

Over the past few weeks, 10 000 youth from all across the world have been discussing their ideas on climate change, and the different effects it has on our planet. Whether it be

agricultural, or energy related we compiled the following policies, which were recommended by the youth in hopes of reducing, or stopping our negative affect on the planet.

In aid to developing countries, the general consensus is that we need to pave the way for less developed countries to introduce green initiatives in order to develop in a sustainable way. The shared recommendation was to provide education more readily than resources. We should share knowledge and experience with these countries in need, and help them develop in a sustainable manner.

In the discussion on the topic of Adaptation and Resilience, it was agreed upon that plans for unfortunate events (should they occur) should be made. If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Our future depends upon these plans, including the preservation of biodiversity. Biodiversity is a major factor in our survival, if an area is taken out, so is everything living there. Rising sea levels and temperature change affect diversity as well as humans.

The development of alternative sources of Energy needs to be encouraged (and perhaps enforced). Starting at the institutional level, we can slowly make the transition into sustainable energy sources. Considering the impacts of certain alternative energy sources is also a must. Hydro-electric power, for example, is dangerous towards biodiversity. This is what makes the discussion on energy so heated.

Agriculture is a hot topic currently with the production of palm oil. The youth voice came to agrees that monocultures of planting should be stopped, and biodiversity preserved. Decreasing meat consumption is something that must be considered. Not only because of the effects on the climate, but the vast amounts of land that are used up to provide space for the animals.

Our oceans and water are vital to our survival. Water is a necessity for almost all functions in life, and yet we pollute our water sources and take them for granted. The general consensus is that water pollution MUST come to an end through the implementation of fines for those, or strict laws against those who intend to pollute any body of water.

Our final item is Land and forest management. The line between passive and used land is one that is often crossed. The amount of land that has been stripped of all natural life is devastating. The deforestation projects, wildfires, and clearing for agricultural purposes has assimilated the amount of forest land we have on this planet. Reclamation of burned forest is a must, we need to clear out burnt trees, and plant new ones. Protection of national parks and prevention of deforestation is a good step for us to take.
